By order of February 27, 2019, the Government of Ukraine approved a strategy for the development of medical education, which provides for a comprehensive approach to changes in medical education.
A new model of training of Ukrainian doctors
The new model of postgraduate training of a doctor will consist of an internship in basic specialties (2-3 years), a medical residency in narrow specialties (3-6 years) and specialization (2-10 months), after which the doctor will receive a specialist certificate.
Dentists will undergo an internship for one year.

The number of specialties for which internship recruitment will be carried out.
The expert commission of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine determined the list of 16 specialties that belong to the primary specialization according to the UEMS (European Association of Medical Specialties).
Certification of future doctors.
According to the new system, in order to obtain the title of a specialist doctor, it will be necessary to pass a mandatory certification – testing in the form of a license integrated exam “Step 3” in the relevant specialty, admission to which will be an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

Implementation of residency.
According to the order, after the internship, doctors will undergo residency, which will last 3-5 years, according to the level of complexity of the relevant specialty.
This stage will not be mandatory for all specialties. After completing the internship, a person has the right to work as a doctor in 16 specialties included in the list. For a narrower specialization of the doctor, it will be necessary to complete a residency.
Specialization
A doctor will be able to obtain the title of specialist after completing specialization, which will be possible after completing an internship or medical residency. The duration of specialization will be 2-10 months, depending on the specialty.
