Doctors (Phd)

The system of basic higher medical education in Ukraine.

Basic medical education with the qualification “Doctor” is possible in the following areas of training: medical practice, pediatrics, medical and preventive medicine.

The curriculum of basic medical education is based on 6 years of study or 360 ECTS credits. One academic year lasts 40 weeks and includes 60 credits (1 week – 1.5 ECTS credits), 1 ECTS credit is 30 academic hours. The academic year has 1800 academic hours. In addition, students undergo industrial medical practice in the 4th and 5th courses with a total of 12 credits.

The total educational load includes time for lectures, practical, seminar and laboratory classes, consultations, practices, independent and individual work and control activities.

The weekly classroom load is an average of 26-29 study hours for students. The volume of independent work is on average 40% of the total. (Clause 3.1 in the version of the Order of the Ministry of Health No. 414 of 23.07.2007)

The curriculum includes two stages of undergraduate training of a doctor: pre-clinical and clinical. The structure of the curriculum is subject-integrated and focused on observing the logical sequence of teaching the disciplines that make up the corresponding cycles of training: humanitarian and social-economic, natural-scientific and professional.

The twelfth semester of the 6th year provides, in addition to student education, preparation for state certification and its implementation.

The names and scope of study of humanitarian and socio-economic disciplines are regulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine, but their list has been reduced due to those. A number of disciplines are sections of other disciplines:

The academic council of a higher educational institution can make changes to the distribution of hours between disciplines within 15% of the total number of hours, but the number of hours from any individual academic discipline cannot be reduced by more than 10% relative to the one provided for the corresponding discipline by the curriculum.

Professional clinical practical training of students in 4-6 courses is carried out in accordance with the requirements of educational and qualification characteristics during the study of clinical and hygienic disciplines and during industrial practice.

The volume of practical work of students in outpatient polyclinic institutions is at least 25% of the number of study hours provided for practical classes in the discipline. (Clause 3.7 in the version of the Order of the Ministry of Health No. 414 dated 07.23.2007)

State certification of graduates includes a standardized test and practically oriented state exams.

The standardized test state exam consists of two test exams “Step 1” and “Step 2”. The test exam “Step 1” is an integrated exam that is held after the 3rd year and measures the quality indicators of the professional component of basic higher education. The test exam “Step 2” is a component of the state certification of graduates of higher medical educational institutions and measures the quality indicators of the professional component of full higher medical education.
