Postgraduate studies

The laws of Ukraine establish that the forms of postgraduate education of doctors are internship, master’s degree, clinical residency and medical residency. Persons undergoing internship, medical residency and clinical residency already have a higher education – a master’s degree in the medical field, which is confirmed by a relevant document, namely a diploma.

 

Internship

According to paragraph 3 of part three of Article 62 of the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education”, an intern is a person who has a master’s degree in medicine or pharmacy and is studying for the purpose of obtaining the qualification of a doctor or pharmacist of a certain specialty according to the list of medical or pharmacist specialties of the internship.

Internship is held in universities, academies, institutes and is a mandatory form of primary specialization of persons in medical and pharmacy specialties to obtain the qualification of a specialist doctor or a specialist pharmacist.

Internship is a mandatory form of postgraduate training for graduates with Ukrainian citizenship of all medical faculties of medical and pharmaceutical higher education institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation, upon completion of which they are awarded the qualification of a specialist in a certain specialty.

The main task of the internship is to increase the level of practical training of graduates of higher medical and pharmaceutical educational institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation of medical faculties of universities, their professional readiness for independent medical or pharmacy activities.

Graduates who are enrolled in postgraduate studies or research work in specialties that do not belong to the “Medicine” or “Pharmacy” field, as well as graduates of Ukrainian higher medical institutions without a permanent residence permit in Ukraine, are exempt from the internship.

Internship is conducted in full-time and part-time form of study at departments of medical and pharmaceutical) higher education institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation of medical faculties of universities and institutions of medical (pharmaceutical) postgraduate education and internships in basic institutions and health care institutions.


Master’s degree

The preparation of masters of medicine or pharmacy is carried out simultaneously with the training of specialists in a certain specialty in an internship and is aimed at in-depth special, scientific-practical, pedagogical and research training of a specialist in the same specialty.

 

Medical residency

Medical residency is conducted in universities, academies, institutes and is a form of specialization of doctors-specialists in certain medical specialties exclusively at the relevant clinical departments to obtain the qualification of a doctor-specialist according to the list of medical specialties approved by the central executive authority in the field of health care.

 

Clinical residency

Clinical residency is conducted at universities, academies, institutes, and scientific institutions and is a form of advanced training for medical specialists who have undergone internship and/or residency training in the relevant medical specialty.

The main task of the clinical residency is to deepen professional knowledge, increase the level of abilities and skills of a doctor-specialist in his medical specialty in order to prepare a highly qualified doctor for independent work in health care institutions.
